Summer 2023 opening hours
Oulu EXAM system is closed 19.6.-9.7.2023. The Examinariums, EXAM service desk and the EXAM system are all closed during this period of time. Note, that it is not possible to perform exams as exam visit, BYOD exams or any other way.
Logging in to the exam computers
In Examinariums you log in to the computer by general username and password. These can be found on the screen of every exam computer.
Always fill in the general username and the password when logging in to the exam computer.

Electronic examination rules
It is very important for students to follow the rules of Examinariums. Please read all the rules and conditions.
- You are permitted to take only a student card or photo identity card (compulsory) and the locker key to the EXAM computer.
- All other objects are forbidden by the exam point. If you have medical or other necessary needs during the assessment, contact e-exam@oulu.fi in advance.
- Examples of forbidden objects by the exam point: telephone, pencil case, own papers, drinking bottle, food, jacket, handbags or backbags…
- In paper exams you can take a pen and a rubber to the EXAM computer. Note! Pencil case is not allowed and will lead to suspection of cheating.
- You are not allowed to leave the Examinarium before 30 minutes after the start of your EXAM.
- Leaving the exam room during the assessment is forbidden.
- Toilet breaks are not allowed in electronic examination.
- Its is forbidden to speak in the exam rooms.
- Realtime video and recordings are used to supervise exams.
- We make random checks into the exam rooms. You must be prepared to verify your identity when asked. You can verify your identity with an identity card or a student card.
There are lockers by the Examinariums. Leave your belongings there before going to the EXAM computer.
Conditions of use for EXAM
By using the e-exam service a student undertakes to abide by the conditions of use and possible special terms that the teacher has defined for the exam. A student consents to audio and video surveillance and to the combining of information of the examinations systems in order to confirm identity. The electronic examination room is equipped with real-time and recording video surveillance (video and audio). Obeying the rules is confirmed by surveillance, random tests and through personal identification.
1. There is no technical support available during exams. The exams are done at one’s own risk.
2. Electronic examinations comply with University of Oulu Education Regulations and student´s information security guidelines. Students of Oulu University of Applied Sciences follow Oulu University of Applied Science Assessment Regulations.
3. The student consents to audio and video surveillance and to the combining of information of the examinations systems in order to confirm identity.
4. The rules of information technology service use and Rules of IT systems use apply in electronic examinations.

General instructions for students
- Log in the Exam-system at https://exam.oulu.fi. Use your academy-specific username and password. We recommend that you use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.
- General exam: open the exams-tab and search for the exam you are supposed to enroll in. You can search for the exam by the course code, the name of the exam or the name of the examiner (=teacher). Read more information about the exam by clicking the name of the exam. Personal exam: you will receive an e-mail of a personal exam after your examiner has created one for you. You will find the personal exam on the reservations tab in the Exam system.
- Make a reservation to an exam by clicking register for the exam or book an exam time. Then choose the exam room and the time where and when you wish to perform the test. Click confirm exam time.
- You will receive a reservation confirmation via e-mail. If needed, you can change or cancel the reservation.
- N.B.! Check that you have enrolled in the course implementation in Peppi. Otherwise your grade can not be registered. Students of Open University don’t have to do this, because their enrollment has been done automatically via enrollment system.
- In the reservation confirmation you will find information about which exam computer the exam system has chosen for you. Before taking the test, be on time by the exact exam computer.
- Log in the computer by the rules in the exam room. Open the browser and log in the Exam system by your academy-specific username and password.
- Exam will take you to the test automatically. Just wait for the examination to start. Answer questions, check and click save and submit.
- Close the browser and sign out from the computer.
- When the examiner has evaluated your assessment, you will receive an e-mail notification.
Performing an electronic examination you commit to the rules and terms of the electronic examination system (below). Carefully read the instructions. Breaking the rules might lead to the disqualification of your assessment.
Practice with a test exam
You can use a test exam to practice how to perform a test in EXAM. Search for the test exam in the Exams-tab searching by word Test exam. Make a reservation and complete the test exam in Examinarium.
If you are not going to perform the test exam, please delete your reservation! The unused reservation decreases the amount of free exam times.
Practice using interactive pen display
You can practise how to use interactive pen display on an E-exam. Search for the test exam in the Exams-tab searching by word Interactive pen display test exam. Make a reservation and complete the test exam in Examinarium.
When you make a reservation to an exam, in which you will use the interactive pen display, you’ll find the instructions about how to use interactive pen display by the exam computer.

Premises
Exam rooms and opening hours
The students in Oulu University of Applied Sciences and in University of Oulu can perform electronic exams on four different campuses: Linnanmaa campus, Oamk Kontinkangas campus, Dentopolis campus and Oamk Oulainen campus.
Please note, that the entrance to the exam rooms is bound to the opening hours of the campus buildings: the campus opening hours of the Oamk and the campus opening hours of the University of Oulu.
The students of the University of Oulu have a possibility to apply for a 24/7-access key to the campuses of Linnanmaa and Dentopolis. More information on the 24/-access key.All the exam rooms are closed on holidays.

Oulu EXAM is closed during 23.12.2022-31.12.2022. EXAM visit is not available during this period.
Examinarium in Oulainen is closed a bit longer, until 8.1.2023.

Detailed instructions
Enrolling in an exam
Note, that there are students from multiple courses performing exams at the same time. Make the reservation as early as possible, so that you’ll get the time slot that’s best for you.
Log in EXAM with your student credentials.
When logging in the first time you need to accept the condition for use of EXAM.
Open Exams on the left side of the screen. If you are attending to a joint exam, open Joint exams.
Search for the exam by writing the name of the exam, the course code, or the name of the examiner on the search field. If you are attending to a personal exam, you will see it on the Reservations tab and you can just make the reservation.
Click “Register for the exam”. If you are attending to a BYOD exam, read more here.
On the next window, check that the exam information fits the exam you are about to attend in. The exam period shows the dates during which you can perform the exam. Read instructions If there are any.
If there are optional sections in the exam, which you want to perform, put a mark to the optional section. If there are no optional sections in the exam, you can not see this part on the page.
Go to Choose room. Choose the room in which you want to perform the exam.
If you want to make a reservation to an unobstructed exam point, click “Accessibility type” and put a mark next to “Unobstucted”.
If you want to perform the exam in another university’s exam room as exam visit, click “Exam room reservation from external institution” and choose the institution in which you want to perform the exam. Then choose room. More about exam visits here.
After you have chosen the room, a calendar will appear. Free exam times are marked with green button. Choose the time best for you by clicking the time slot. (N.B.! Note the opening hours).
Check, that the reservation information is correct. Click “Confirm exam time”.
You reservation is ready, and you can find it on your Reservations-tab.
On the Exam room you will see the number of the exam computer that has been reserved to you and the name on the Examinarium. Remember these before going to the exam. You can perform the exam only on the computer that has been assigned to you.
You will also see instructions. You should read these before the exam.
Canceling or changing the reservation
On the top right corner of the reservation these is a pencil icon. Click there, and you can edit the reservation or remove the booking. NOTE! If you remove the booking, you are still enrolled in the exam. So after removing the booking, click the pencil icon again and cancel registration also.
If you can not attend to the reservation that you have made, it is very important to remove or change the reservation. When you cancel or change the reservation, the time slot will bee free for someone else to use.
During the exam
Before attending an exam, read EXAM rules. Breaking the rules will lead to a suspection of cheating and failing your exam performance.
Log in the computer using account information on the lower part of the screen.
Open Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
Choose your own university as organization on the Haka-log in page. Add your own credentials and log in.
Your exam starts automatically. If you are early, just wait.
If you are on the wrong computer, EXAM will tell you the number of the right computer. In that case sign out from the computer and move on to the right computer.
When the exam begins, you will automatically go to the instruction page. Read the instructions. If there is an attachment, you can find it on the right side of the instruction page.
In the exam there are sections which include questions. Move between sections by clicking the green button below the questions. The button has the name of the next section on it.
Complete the exam
On the black screen on top of the page you will see the name of the exam and the course code. In the middle of the screen you can change the language to English, Finnish or Swedish. This won’t affect the language of the questions. On the right side there is a clock that tells you the time left. You can hide the clock from the green button next to the clock.
Below the black screen you’ll see the name of the section, maximum point amount and possible instructions. Under the section instructions you’ll find questions. Read the question, answer and save. You can add an attachment by clicking “Add attachment” -button.
When you have answered all the questions in all sections, save and submit. If you want to abort the exam, click Abort exam.
By Your Own Device (BYOD)
EXAM BYOD is an application which makes it possible to perform exams outside the Examinariums. Teacher can create a BYOD exam, and students complete the exams for example on their own computer.
BYOD can bee unrestricted or restricted. In unrestricted BYOD student has all the resources of the computer in use and access to the internet during the exam. In restricted exam access to internet and resources of the computer are blocked by Safe Exam Browser during the exam.
Unrestricted BYOD
Student can perform an unrestricted exam by their own computer, own mobile phone, tablet, or other device.
Student can choose the place for performing the exam. Unrestricted BYOD can be performed for example at home or in a library.
In unrestricted BYOD student has access to internet and to all the resources in the computer.
Teacher creates an exam event or multiple exam events to certain date and to certain time. Student chooses which exam event they want to choose and enrolls in it.
Enrolling in unrestricted BYOD
Student enrolls in unrestricted BYOD by choosing the most fit exam event that are offered in the EXAM system.
- Log in EXAM and search for the EXAM you wish to enroll in. Enroll.
- Book an exam time. Click “Book an exam time” and choose the exam event which fits your schedule the best.
- You will receive a confirmation about the exam reservation in e-mail.
- As normal exams you can cancel your enrollment or change the reservation.
Performing an unrestricted BYOD
- When the EXAM is about to start, log in EXAM on your own computer. The exam will start automatically when the exam event begins.
- Answer the questions by the instructions on the exam. When you are ready, save and submit.
Restricted BYOD
Student can perform a restricted BYOD exam on their own computer or on a general computer.
Teacher decides the place an the time for taking the exam. Restricted exams are always performed under supervision.
In restricted BYOD student’s computer is blocked by Safe Exam Browser during the exam. Safe Exam Browser blocks access to internet and computer’s resources.

- You will receive an e-mail which includes a launching file. Save the file for the examination.
Enrolling in restricted BYOD
- Log in EXAM and search for the EXAM you wish to enroll in. Enroll.
- Book an exam time. Click “Book an exam time” and choose the exam event which fits your schedule the best.
- You will receive a confirmation about the exam reservation in e-mail. In attachment there is a launching file. Do not delete this e-mail! Save the attachment. You will need it when the exam event starts. If the launching file disappears, you can download it again in EXAM system.
- As normal exams you can cancel your enrollment or change the reservation. If you make changes to the reservation, you will receive a new launching file.
Performing a restricted BYOD
Download Safe Exam Browser to your computer before the examination.
- When you get a permission from your teacher, open Safe Exam Browser file on the e-mail that you have received from EXAM. You can also log in EXAM system and open the file there.
- Open the file and write down the password that you get from your teacher.
- After writing the password, log in EXAM and givr your credentials (account, not account@student.oulu.fi)
- Safe Exam will block everything except EXAM on your computer.
- NOTE! If you try to close the Safe Exam Browser the wrong way, your computer will lock. After this you need a password to open your computer, follow the instructions.
- When you have answered all questions, click Save and submit.
- If you want to abort the exam, click abort exam.
- You will receive an exit link. Click the link. Now you can use your computer normally.
- Tell the teacher that you have submitted the exam. After this you can leave the exam room.
Individual study arrangements and and accessibility
Health
If a student has to take medical products (such as asthma- or migraine medication) to the exam point, the student must inform service support e-exam@oulu.fi in advance.
Longer examination time
The students with an application for individual study arrangements are allowed to perform exams in a longer examination time. Longer examination time is four hours (235 minutes). These exams are arranged as personal exams.
Unobstructed exam point
On Linnanmaa campus there are three unobstructed exam points, on Dentopolis campus there is one and on Oamk Kontinkangas campus there is also one. These exam points include a wider table with a possibility to adjust the height of the table. Unobstructed exam points are suitable for wheelchairs.
How to make an exam reservation to an unobstructed exam point
- Log in the Exam system and search for the exam the same way as in the general instructions.
- Click accessibility type. Put a mark on the unobstructed access.
- The Exam system will offer you all the exam rooms, which include an unobstructed access. Choose the exam room where you want to take the exam.
- Choose the time when you want to perform the exam.
- Act by the general instructions.

Undisturbed examination room
If you have an application for individual study arrangements, you are allowed to perform the exam in a room without other students. Teacher or other person in charge of the exam will create a personal BYOD -exam, which the student performs in undisturbed examination room BF128-1.
Contact your teacher or person in charge of the exam to perform the exam in undisturbed examination room.
- Teacher and student agree to the date and time for the exam in advance.
- Teacher makes a reservation in the undisturbed examination room BF128-1 during the agreed date and time.
- Teacher creates a personal BYOD-exam and adds an exam event during the agreed date and time.
- Student enrolls in the exam and enrolls in the exam event in the EXAM system. Read instructions about BYOD exams here.
- Teacher creates a Teams-meeting during the exam event and sends an invitation to the Teams meeting for the student.
- Student goes to the room BF128-1 before the exam event starts.
- Student uses their own credentials to log in the computer. Enter your username in short form account (without @student.oulu.fi -ending).
- Student opens Teams, joins the meeting and opens the microphone and the camera. Camera is located in the roof. Teacher also joins the Teams-meeting and supervises the exam via the video and sounds coming from the room.
- Student opens Google Chrome and goes to www.exam.oulu.fi. They log in the EXAM using their own university’s Haka-credentials.
- The exam starts automatically. Student performs the exam.
- Student submits the exam in the EXAM system when ready. Then they close the browser and leave the Teams-meeting.
- Student signs out of the computer and leaves the examination room.
- Teacher evaluates the exam in the EXAM system. Student receives the evaluation information in their own EXAM.
Problems and technical support
The system support address of electonic examination is e-exam@oulu.fi.
Instructions for different situations:
1. The exam computer or the browser becomes stuck mid-performance
Restart the computer, log in, open the browser, log in Exam and complete the exam.
2. The performance is interrupted or prevented
Log off the computer, if possible, and leave the exam room. Immediately fill in and send the report form for interruption in an electronic exam
3. An emergency appears
There is an emergency button in all the exam rooms. Follow the emergency instructions or set an alert.
4. You are on your way to the exam room and you notice that the campus is closed
Cancel your exam reservation and make a new reservation. If needed, contact the examiner (=teacher).
5. A power outage appears
Wait for the power to recover. If the power recovers, restart the computer, log in, open the browser, log in the Exam and continue taking the performance. In case the power does not recover, act as instructed in section 2. The performance is interrupted or prevented.
Whether you run into a problem that doesn’t resolve by the instructions above, immediately contact service support at e-exam@oulu.fi. Be prepared to tell more about the problem.
N.B.! Is it strictly forbidden to use mobile phone or send e-mail in the exam room. To contact service support, exit the exam room. The possibility for retaking the exam will be evaluated after you have contacted service support.
Softwares on exam computers
The usage od softwares is limited on the exam computers. Access to internet is denied despite the Exam-web.
On all computers: Mozilla Firefox (only Exam), Word without proofreading, Excel, PowerPoint, Paint, PDF-Xchange, 7-zip, Java, Java- and gcc/g++, Notepad ++, C/C++:, Codeblocks + Mingw, Mingw-translator, Catch, Dr. Memory, Cppcheck, Doxygen, Cpp reference offline version HTML book, NetBeans, Aiforia
On some computers: MathCad Prime, interactive pen display, headphones (computers with headphones have also VLC Media Player), Microsoft Calc, Microdicom Viewer
Service breaks
A service break appears on the Electronic examination system on the first Wednesday of every month at 8am-10am.
N.B.! The Exam-system and the exam rooms are out of order during the points of time mentioned above. The EXAM visits are also out of use during this time.
EXAM visit
Exam visit is a service that allows you to perform an exam at the premises of another institution. In other words, as a student of University of oulu or Oulu University of Applied Sciences, you can perform exams for example in Helsinki or Rovaniemi.
Only some of the Exam-universities offer the possibility to an exam visit. Read the names of the universities offering exam visit service from this website.
N.B.! As a student of University of Oulu or Oulu University of Applied Sciences, you are allowed to use both of the electronic examination premises of Oulu University and Oamk freely. In other words, you can use all the four exam rooms and there is no need for you to use the exam visit-service.
How to make an EXAM visit reservation
Check these things before making a reservation for an exam visit
- The opening hours of the institution you are visiting
- Instructions to find the exam room

- Follow the general instructions.
- When choosing the exam room, choose exam room reservation from external institution.
- Choose the institution in which you are planning to perform the exam.
- Choose an exam room and an examination time.
- Confirm exam time.
- Write down the name of the campus, building, exam point and the number of the exam computer. You will receive a reservation confirmation via e-mail.
When visiting an institution, log in to the local institution’s Exam system. Choose the name of you own institute on the Haka-log in and use your own academy-specific username and password.

Paper exam
Paper exam means that you will write down the answers on a paper, but the questions are in the EXAM system.
You must always perform paper tests on your own campuses exam room.
Paper exams are recommended to be performed on Mondays.
The exam questions are in the EXAM system. Write down the answers on a paper you can find in the exam room. If necessary, you can use your own pen and rubber. N.B.! Bringing a pencil case to the exam computer is not allowed and will create a suspection of cheating.
When ready, write down your name, student number and the name of the exam on the answering paper. Put the answering papers (including sketches) in an envelope. On the envelope write down the name of your examiner and the internal post address. Return the envelope to the return box in the exam room.

In the EXAM-system there will be made accessibility statement repairs to the 6.2 version. The new accessibility statement will be published with the 6.2 version during spring 2023.

Informing accessibility problems
Have you noticed any accessibility problems in our digital services? Please let us know and we will do our best to correct the problem.
Provide accessibility feedback by email to e-exam@oulu.fi.
Supervisory authority
If you notice accessibility problems on the website, you should first send any feedback to us, the site administrator. We will normally send you an answer within 14 days of receiving the feedback.
If you are not satisfied with the response you have received or you do not receive any response after two weeks, you may submit a notification to the Regional State Administrative Agency for Southern Finland. The website of the Regional State Administrative Agency for Southern Finland provides detailed information on how to submit the notification and how the matter is processed. Please note that the website is in Finnish and Swedish only.
